Last week, we gifted a reliable car to a single mom in need whose identity we need to keep totally private. But what we can share is the lesson on prayer she’s taught us. While waiting for her paperwork to be completed, we had the honor of chatting with her Advocate, Shawna, who has championed and encouraged this sweet mom through the last few years. As we were talking, she said that there had been many conversations about how to, "Pray for big things. Expect that God can do it, even a car." Another friend also chimed into that conversation to say that, "If a car is what you need, God can provide it. Pray specifically for a car that is reliable enough to get you where you need to be." Our client wrestled with this big prayer. Was it selfish or materialistic to ask God for something like a car?
A few weeks later we gathered at the tax office to watch her receive the keys to a new-to-her, low mileage, reliable Toyota. Five days later, she wrote us to say,
“I just wanted to thank you again for the amazing gift of the car—I can’t express enough how much it’s meant to me. We’re loving it so much, and it’s a huge relief to know I no longer have to worry about whether or not my car will start. Since having reliable transportation, I’ve been able to sign my daughter up for cheer class and she’s also joined Girl Scouts! It’s such a weight off my shoulders.”
What a reminder that our God hears, sees, and cares about our specific needs, whether they be big or small. He's a good Father, who loves to give good gifts.
